Being usually quite skittish up here, a pair (now a trio) of male GWTs has thrilled a number of local photographers for a couple of weeks with their relative approachability. Today was my third try at them, but the first with the right combination of light, proximity, and timing (didn't have to head back home so early this time!!) They are still rather nervous, but with patience, good timing, and no sudden movements they will come to shore. I was quite happy when this guy offered me a wing flap with a proper body/head angle:). Also glad I caught the peak of the action!

Canon 40D + 100-400L @400mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/500s., f/6.3, ISO 800, +2 EC, natural light, handheld. Slight crop for comp (about 85% FF).

Love the sharpness and the pose Daniel. This has the look of flash to me, but I see you didn't use it.

Excellent shot!! A slight levels adjustment can make it sing. Happy to re-post it with your permission.

Cool pose, good eye contact, pose and sharpness. My first thought was that it looks a bit overflashed and was surprised you didn't use flash. Maybe some midtone adjustment?

Thanks guys. Interesting observation about the "flashed" look. One thing I should have mentioned about the sunlight was that it was filtered by a surprisingly thick layer of cloud. That, combined with the still-wet plumage may have contributed to this look.

Hi Ofer, you don't need my permission...you can go right ahead with a repost!

Here it is Daniel, slight levels, S/H, contrast, colour saturation and cooling filter to get some nicer blue in the water.;)

    Very nice Dan....third time's a charm!
Just the right amount of wing blur to convey the motion. I'd say you caught him at the most opportune moment. Ofer's repost is an improvement, but I feel like it might be just a touch too much saturation.

Great shot! I think the soft light and the +2EC(nice!) is what helped alot, as well as timing, etc. regards~Bill

    Great shot Daniel,

These wing flap images of ducks are always my favorite shots to get. I always seem to be in the wrong spot or have bad lighting and seem to never get a good opportunity. You did a great job capturing this one on a generally skittish bird.

Great capture Dan. I'm hesitant to post any of mine after this one.
