    Default Lesser Whitethroat

I am new on this forum and I am just amazed over the lovely pictures you all take. This is my first picture of a quite common bird in my country Lesser Whitethroat. It is a very shy bird and it very seldom comes out from the threes and bushes where it lives. It would be nice to have some comments on the picture as I would like to become a better photographer. Camera D300 F/7,1 1/640 ISO 320.

    With kind regards

    Patricia:

A big welcome to BPN. Your bird is well exposed, with good head position, perch the right size for the size bird.

The wing area is sharp, the head/eye a bit less so. Some additional sharpening there would help

The composition is a bit tight below, a little more space would make the bird seem less cramped.

Be sure to include your lens info (which lens) since that often helps with critiquing. Comments on any post processing or workflow often allow us to help you more as well.

Again, welcome, and keep them coming.

    Cheers

    Randy

PS: I shoot the D300 too.

Thank you very much for showing interest in my picture. The lens I have is a Nikon 300 mm f.4 and sometimes I use Nikon 1,4 x converter.

Nice first post. I like the pose. The sharpness looks good. You could probably sharpen the beak a little. The image is a bit tight on the bottom.

    Welcome Patricia :)

Agree with Randy's comments relative to the head / eye area sharpness. This is where Artie's Digital Basics and Roberts O'Tooles APTATS would teach you a whole lot for short dollars. Honestly, I learned more from those 2 documents than I might have ever learned on my own. (No...I don't owe Artie or Robert any favors :)

Also, there is something funky going on in the lower right corner. Did you perhaps try and clone something in that area?

Yes I took away a little branch that I thought was disturbing the picture. Is that allowed on this forum. If I do it again should I give that information.

I'm not concerened that a branch was removed (many do disclose this info)...it's just that the area looks as though something had been removed. A little quick mask and an averaging blur would help it now or even better, a cleaner method of removing the little branch beforehand.

Thank you Jim for your help. I am not that good att changing things in my pictures I only have an older version of Photoshop. Maybe I should invest in something better.

I agree with the comments above, and would add that the image seems a bit dark. I might lighten the midtones a tad in PS. Go to levels and move the slider in the middle to the left a bit.

If you have CS2 or newer, I would stick with it, and not buy a newer version.

    Looking forward to more!

everything already said so nothing new to add... This bird is a major skulker and almost never comes out into the open so I really appreciate this image... may I know where it was clicked??

    Welcome Patricia.

I would agree with Randy's critque, and also think the background being a bit lighter would help. I can hardly see the bird's lower foot on the perch. I too, am trying to learn the post editing and have an older version of PS. I looked and still cannot see the boo boo the others referred to in the lower right corner? This is a sweet image of a pretty little bird. I love being able to see birds from other countries, on this site. Thank You for sharing yours.

I took the picture in my garden in the very south of Sweden. The bird does not stay here during the winter it moves south to afrika and of course to India. Its fun to think that the bird in my garden suddenly lives in your garden so many miles apart.

    with kind regards
