I took this a couple weeks ago at Point Roberts. We get a lot of very dull days this time of year and I wonder if this works at all. 50D, 500 f/4 and 1.4 TC, 1/1500, f/5.6, ISO 1600. Tks, Dave

    Dave:

It works for me. As a fan of loons, I always enjoy seeing them. In Michigan we only see their alternate plumage, so this is a treat. Excellent exposure, nice wing spread, shooting angle. Just a bit oversharpened for my taste. I might have preferred the head straight on so you could see both eyes.

did you do any noise reduction? At this ISO, I would have expected some creeping in.

    Thanks

    Randy

I love the soft light, the pose, the underwing detail, and that creamy breast. Only the face looks over-sharpened to me but it is way over-done.... Otherwise very sweet.

Hi Dave, Since there was so little color to begin with i did A quick B&W conversion if PS using the green filter. We do not normally think of B&W for avian photography but when I have grey water I will sometimes go with it. Also love the pose but the face is over sharpen as pointed out by others.

Lovely image, Dave--it does seem to be a bit oversharpened in places.
Great angle, pose. If you have not used any NR--I would like to see more applied to the wing feathers as well.

Thanks a lot for the comments. The consensus is over sharpened in the head area. I had wondered about the sharpening and the noise. It seems generally, I have been able to deal with the noise in the exposure and with Topaz; the sharpening not so well. I am coming to the conclusion to pick a sharpening "treatment" and stick with it.
A head on shot would have been nice. My preference would have been for a bit more profile.
I like the idea of b/w. Often there is not a lot of colour available anyway.
I am glad though that 1600ISO is not an insurmountable option.
    Thanks Again, Dave

Really like this Dave. The monochromatic nature of it allows you to concentrate on the wonderful variety of textures. Head doesn't worry me - just another texture.

IMHO i like the original post better with a little brown touch.
it would have been nice if you haven't applied the sharpness as its already a furry featured duck and would sure love to see an unsharped version of this.. a reall touchy image for me.

I like the angle, wing flap and monochromatic feel. Sharpening has been mentioned.

Lovely image of a great bird. I like the head angle as is, and the subtle colours are better to my eye than the B&W.

Love the pose and angle of view Dave. I feel also this is a little oversharpened. Some fine tuning and you have a winner IMHO. :)

Thanks Akos. I had three versions and posted this one!! Go figure. It is encouraging though to see that 1600ISO can produce acceptable photos. Dave
