    Default Bosque: The Sweet Light

I photographed this Crane from the Flight Deck as it was coming home for the night. Only a couple of minutes of light (it was concealed by clouds) but it sure was sweet. I removed portions of a couple of other birds from the frame and cleaned up the vegetation a little.

Hi Doug, Pretty impressive hand held capture. I think your image has good exposure and sharpness. I like the composition. The landing pose is great in my opinion as it shows the under-wing detail very nicely. Good head angle with a good view of the eye. I also like the background. Thanks for sharing.

    Doug...

Really enjoy the light, the pose and the way the eye pops.

I will also note that I have yet to see a 7D image from anyone that looks like it's critically sharp relative to fine detail? Something about the detail seems to be smoothed out or lacking. I realize that this was created with a fairly shallow DOF and that adds to the equation.

Hi Jim. Can't say that I agree with your statement about all 7D images. In this particular case the image was captured at ISO 1250 and it's safe to say that fine detail was somewhat negatively impacted.

Have a look at this thread that I posted a few days ago. I included a 100% crop of the RAW file somewhere in the thread. I have plenty of what I consider to be tac-sharp images, but of course people differ on what they consider to be tac-sharp. I've never shot Nikon so I'm not sure what fine detail looks like at 100% on Nikon bodies. But in the Canon scheme of things the 7D is capable of excellent fine detail IMO.

Thanks Doug....I'll take a look at the thread.

I had seriously considered this camera and a Canon 600, but I've yet to see an image that appears to have the detail it should. Perhaps I'll get eductaed on your thread :)

Thats a grogeous image Doug. Good job on the clean-up as well. I have spent the morning trying to clean up background on just one image and it is a daunting task for sure. I am also impressed at an ISO1250 7D shot. Guess all those folks badmouthing the ISO of this camera at the other forum are full of it.

Nice shot, especially considering it was hand held. I have been less than impressed with high ISO images from my 7D so far. I think Canon may have pushed a little too far with the MPixels for this size sensor.

OMG Doug this is fabulous. The pose and composition you captured here are just amazing. I don't know if you could have made a better shot than this. Just one of those magical opportunities when everything comes together perfectly.

Great shot, Doug! I love the golden light. I have been contemplating the purchase of a 7D. This image makes my decision easier for sure.

Love it for all the reasons above. You needed the perfect wind and you got it. For the repost all that I did was select the bird with a Quick Mask, sharpen it at 185/.3/0 and take a bit off of the bottom.

    Yikes!

Arthur really got the ''sweet light'' here! Love this repost, as I have mentioned before, I love saturated colors, and this one is full of warm ones.

Love the open wings and their details, the eye, the BG, even the nails!

I would love to have this one hanging in my living room wall!

Nada. I saved it as a JPEG and then opened and re-saved it as a JPEG. I agree that it looks warmer now. No clue as to why....

Let me add my congrats on a fine image Doug. Super landing posture, with the outspread wings, and the soft light and warm colours, puts this over the top.

Sweet light and one of the best landing poses against a nice BG. detail is good, for those who are nitpicking you can run another run of NR just under the wings. I actually prefer the original post, Artie's repost is good but a bit grainy.
