Default Kelp Gull with Puffer Fish #2

A while back, I posted this juv Kelp Gull with a Puffer Fish. It created quite a bit of interest due to the puffer fish being poisonous, and if the gull had eaten any of it, it would have died. Here is the link to interesting facts about the puffer fish. This was taken on the South Coast of South Africa.

    Stuart:

Nice capture here. Perhaps they are going to play a bit of soccer?

I like the banking pose of the gull, with the nice view of wing detail, top and bottom.

From a comp. standpoint, might give it just a sliver more room at the top.

Hope your next picture is not of a dead gull!

Stuart, Lovely colors in the BG . The Puffer Fish looks neat-I never saw one before. Nice details in the wings. It looks just a bit tight.

Makes you really wonder if the gull 'knows' that this is not something it should eat. I like the pose and sharpness.

I love the 2-tone BG in this one and great exposure mate! Interesting, I wonder what the goal with the fish was in the end?

A couple of years ago I found a carcass of a Southern Royal Albatross that had died from swallowing a Puffer Fish. We published a short note on it in Notornis, the journal of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand, last year. If anyone wants to see it, just drop me your address. Not a wise meal!

    Cheers, Phil
