    Default Missouri Whitetail

My wife asked me this morning why I wasn't going to work and I said, "I'm walking down to my hide to see if I can get a Steve Canuel style shot, Missouri style. A nice 8-pointer came out to the edge of the field and started tearing up a tree and then moved quickly along the brush. I let out a grunt, a lame one from my own throat, but he stopped for a moment, looked at me, then quickly faded away. I got a shot but it was still pretty dark. I cleaned it up as best I could in LR II. It would have been nice to be able to stop down a bit and employ Artie's long lens technique at 1/30 but there was no time. I wanted to share this photo because I rarely see big game from Missouri on BPN. Thanks.

Canon 40D; Canon 500 F4 L IS; 1/100; F/4.0; EC +2/3; ISO 800; Gitzo Tripod w/Wimberley II spread across my lap. Canon DPP and Lightroom II.

Very nice job Danny. I know what he is thinking. Freeze or flee? Nice detail and BG, and the head and neck are in the clear.

Hey Danny, your grunt worked - just love the alert pose, and nicely framed between the grasses. Well captured.

Thanks everybody - I kind of rushed PP but I wanted to get one in hot off the press instead of from the files.

    Hi Danny,
I like my Muleys but there's something special about healthy Whitetail bucks. Difficult to get around here but I'm trying. I like the alert pose and the symmetry of the antlers. Also like the diagonal framing of his head with the two grassy weeds. I'm seeing a little noise in the BG and a slight bluish cast in the whites. Nice to be able to see these guys in your own back yard.

Hi Steve: Good call on the bluish cast. Sometimes I miss color casts because I'm so focused on other stuff. I warmed the image up a few 100 degrees and the blue came right out. I worked on the ISO noise for a while and finally settled. Thanks for the input my friend.

A very crisp image, I love the sharpness and colors, the green BG makes it more interesting.

I actually think the slightly "washed out" look improves the image.

Would have been more comfortable to hand hold?

What a lovely 8 pointer you captured here. The IQ is very good and I like the habitat. Very fine image Danny.

Like the eye contact and the OOF vegetation surrounding the deer. Very sharp as well.

Hi Ken: I'm a tripod addict and don't even handhold my 300 F4 unless I'm shooting at birds in flight. Anyway, Artie would kill me if he found out I was trying to handhold a 500 F4 in low light at ISO 800.:) Thanks for the comments. Take care.

Such a cute subject, there is so much innocense on its face. The surroundings make a great feel
