I have been told that Canon is coming out with a new 500mm L-lens but I can't seem to find any info about it online. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether or not this is true, as I am considering one. Thanks!

I haven't seen any reliable posts regarding new tele lenses recently. Many people speculate that Canon might release new 500 and 600mm lenses with better IS technology but that remains to be seen.
Eventually, all their lenses will be replaced by the new hybrid IS technology. I think they will introduce the new IS to the super teles later. The first will be the intermediate and smaller teles.

Sab, I am unsure if the hybrid IS would be suitable for non-macro application.
Amy, the rumor is based on Canon's product cycle. Canon has consistently been updating L prime lenses and one L zoom since 2006. So eventually the 500L lens will be updated.
The question is when and based on what Canon has done so far it could happen within a conservative 24 months or liberal 4 months. I say a liberal 4 months because of the World Cup, Winter Games and pressure from Nikon. Same reasons why the EOS 1D Mark III was updated sooner than expected.
Improvements that are expect are better AF, better IQ, IS with 5 or more stops, less weight, closer focusing distance or a bigger/smaller aperture.
If you can wait, then wait but if you have a paying gig then may as well buy it now.
Long lenses not expected to be updated are the 200/2L IS and the 800/5.6L IS as they were sold starting last year.
I myself am looking forward to an updated 500.
