Hi Denise: This one held my eye for a long time. I love the way the little guy is all fluffed up. The contrasting colors of white, mocha and black are all coming through and I can really see the feather detail right here on my laptop even on the whitest whites. I'm not a big head angle inspector but this one appears to be dialed in just right. Finally, I like the way the sand reveals the narrow slice of focus that runs across the bird and after that everything dissolves into milky bokeh. Nice........Thanks.
denise again a marvelous image .. your'e doing quite good with waders this days. hope we also get such nice place and closeness in india too.
liked the fluffy look for this one. good light captured and expo is just perfect as usual you have.
i only wish that the focus plane you have here which make the slanting focus on ground may not be there or you may have the oof forground may in focus where you may have compensated the horizon level.
Bit of noise visible in the feathers. but not much disturbing and atleast i dont care for that when you have such a fantastic image.
wish one day i could make such images with big guns.
as i am writing this points but never achived such things in my images :)
big congrats.
Lovely subject Denise :)
Two observations....
-The background is almost too light colored for my eyes (water).
-Perhaps if the eye were both lightened and contrast sharpened a bit it might become more obvious as it doesn't really stand out and seems to get lost when I look at this image.
I know that the in thing to do is shoot infinitesimally shallow DOF images...they just look really unnatural to me as my eyes surely don't see things that way and the comments I get from customers when I've tried this with print sales falls along the same lines. They instantly ask why I did so much Photoshop work.
Just an observation and I know I'd loose on BPN, but I think one can show more of a natural DOF and still get sufficient subject isolation.
Hi Denise,
Whilst I do agree with Jim about the eye being a little lost and I also understand when he says that his customers are not so keen on the images with shallow DOF, I love it. I think that there are so many ways to present an image and this look really enables the bird to star. I also love the soft colours of the BG.
Having said all that, I too get comments from people (who are not bird photographers!) who do not understand how this look is achieved in camera.
Really looking forward to meeting you in February!
Best regards,
Nicki
Thankyou all for the comments. I appreciate each of them. Here is a repost w/ the eye area a bit lightened.
Jim, I understand your thoughts on shallow DOF and can appreciate your thoughts. I happen to like that look. Different strokes for different folks.:)
Nicki, I look forward to meeting you as well.

Jim: I have the same problem with customers who buy my prints in the local art gallery. They tend to love the photos that I often like the least and they always think that I and other photograhers are photoshopping things to death. Little do they know that I only do a few things in LR II and often do all the work in Canon DPP. Its frustrating but I just go with the flow and try to make them happy, as you do. Thanks for bringing this up as its always a concern. I really do like Denise's thin slice of shorebird heaven in this example though.
Denise...
Great work on the eye and IMHO, it made a big difference to bring it out of the black feathers on the head :)
Thanks Jim, You were right about the eye-it does look much better.
Denise, This one is an eye-catcher: feather texture, subtle colours, and yes, the shallow DOF. Normally I am not very partial to such a shallow DOF but in this image it works beautifully for me.
Hi Denise,
Jim is problably right about the general public, but i am a huge fan of images like this one, i had some of mine images framed and they look amazing hanging on the wall.
Hi Denise
Quite late here , but must say another beautiful shot and repost looks better
TFS
Fantastic image and I like the details and the pose. The repost is subtle but looks good. Another great shorebird image Denise!!
Thankyou all for your kind words and comments. I appreciate them.
I like the darker contrasty colours on the turnstone, together with good feather detail. Lovely pastel colours in the BG too. Well captured.
Your repost rocks.
Love the clean BG and head turn.
Stuart and Juan, Thankyou both for your kind words. Much appreciated.
