OK, so there isn't a lot of autumn leaf color in the image, but what can you say when a fawn brings you her favorite fall leaf???? :D

This is another image where I used the center focus point and cut off the feet, but I couldn't zoom out any farther and if I remember right, I was about to drop off the bank and into the river if I stepped back any farther. So I thought of the motto here--something to the effect of "chop, don't clip". So when processing I did away went the back and most of the legs. I also should have used a lower ISO, the fawn didn't require that much speed. lol. But I forgot to change it when it stepped into the sunlight. The original image was quite yellow, the info said the WB was manual white balance. I don't understand that. I didn't set it on custom. or could that mean the "cloudy" setting? And the yellow leaf was very clipped. But hey, at least I remembered to watch for a catchlight in the eye!!

wow. this photo stuff has so much to try to do right!!

    Hi Cheryl,
This is a sweet image and capture...I don't have a problem with cutting the leg, given the circumstances. You have good details along with a good head angle and eye contact. The main issue here is the angle of the light, casting a shadow on the doe's face. Ideal conditions would have been the light behind you...aside from this, I like it...looking forward to the next one...

WB should be set on auto, daylight or cloudy,..not sure what happened. In PS you can correct, looks like you recovered nicely.

ISO is fine, 200 better but I shot 400 with my 40D and it does the job, Gus is right the light angle weakens the image. On balance, this is very cute, original and a great nature shot. I would try S&H and work the shadow some. Cheryl, you lived and captured a very special moment, what else really matters.

I like your fawn's leaf very much, and I also like the cute little creature attached to it! I think the leaf is the strong visual magnet in this image, so I don't mind the mixed light so much. You have a nice ROT composition and I think the cropping is fine. Very cute!

Hi Cheryl - mighty cute - just the light angle detracting a little - gotta take whats given to you sometimes though.
Composition works well. Like it :)

I like the leaf, and I would crop some from the top.

Sorry, forgot the fawn :) The fawn looks good, too !

Thank you all, for your critiques. I appreciate them. In the field I saw the shadow being distracting, and I lightened it as much as I thought I could in curves.

Jeff, I forgot about shadows/highlights, will try that. Thank you for your last sentence. That is really what keeps me in photography, through the frustrations and difficulties of getting the image you "see" in the field. It is benefits of being outdoors that keep me going.

I appreciate the cropping suggestions--I have another deer image that I have a cropping question on. Will upload that one eventually.

Gus, don't say you are looking forward to more deer pics, unless you mean it. I have what seems like thousands of them. Of course, not many which would quality for here though. lol Hey, you gotta shoot what you have.

nice image Cheryl.....good advice about the light, good advice about taking what you can get sometimes.
S/H suggested by Jeff may work.(edit: just tried s/h and it works wonderfully here)

A very simple slight midtone levels adjustment will open those shadows a tolerable amount
    and greatly reduce the harshness

Cuteness over the top Type of image that sells well :) Love the repost by Dave and special effect !! Lightening wise might go a little less with the shadow since my brain keeps saying it should be there. Normally you need the light angle if possible since flash is not an option !!!
