Hi all, A mature forest species that I don't think has been posted on BPN before...this is a quick little bird that rarely if ever is still. The head angle here is still several degrees short of ideal, but is the best that I got.
Canon 50D, 500 f/4 plus 1.4x II, ISO 800 1/50 sec @ f/5.6, cropped 20% from left and top
Would suggest more ISO even at the expense of noise, image is a little soft. Light is coming from the right making the throat area a little hot but don't think is over, easy PS fix !!!
Always great to see these little guys and I agree that they are not exactly cooperative most of the time. Too bad you did not have more light for higher shutter speed. You probably didn't have enough time to move a bit to your right.
Thanks Al and Axel, You caught me Al...it is still soft after some considerable sharpening efforts in PP. Shutter speed was just too slow. You're right Axel...he/she was very intent on getting up that trunk and there are branches in the way not too far up. I followed him for several trees but never had a good chance at a more side view with a reasonable background.
I followed one around a tree last Thanksgiving at Big Bend NP. He was really unconcerned with me being three feet away. You have motivated me to go back and rework some of the images.
Tough conditions to capture an always moving target. I like the backside view of the plumage. A little soft as noted. I'd darken the shadowed side of the trunk a bit to give it some depth and more of a feel for his environment (personal taste).
