It is not every day that I get charged by 2 black rhino all be it one a baby... Totally unprovoked. We were photographing a pride of lions early morning , when one of the younger lionesses spotted the two rhino in the distance feeding....
We expected her to go and take a look as young lionesses are very curious. So preempting her we did a wide loop so we could watch the interaction. Stopping a 100 mtrs away from both subjects. We watched the young cat approach ... when all of a sudden the rhino charged us...we were so busy shooting as they ran at us that we nearly forgot the danger we were in... 10 mts or so from the vehicle the ranger/ guide began shouting and hitting his door furiously... the rhinos pulled up 5 mts short in a cloud of dust...and veered off in a different direction.. much to our relief...
The shot of a life time - or - so one might hope. Great composition under duress. The only thing that could make it better if you were a Photoshop guru. Thanks for shareing.
This is wonderful Peter. Not only is it exciting in charging, and full head on, but you just gotta love their behavior. Cranky as **** and true to form, with the blacks, the youngster follows. Image wise, i'd selectively sharpen the head a tad. Top drawer sir!
I like the low perspective Peter, and what a great head on shot. Dramatic action, together with left over food in the mouth. Well captured. In your rush, you forgot to post your camera techs - but you said 10m.
I can feel the angst Peter! I've only seen black rhinos once before and not this out in the open...love the pose, action and light and agree sharpening the head some more might boost this.
Hi Peter, fantastic action you managed to capture. The raised feet the cloud of dust makes me feel as if I were there. I also think the side lighting ads to the drama.
Excellent front on action image Peter!
I don't suppose you got one with her pulling up 5m's short in a cloud of dust, now that would be really impressive!
It was a truly amazing and a little frightening .TBH I was more frightened of not getting the shot so really did not think about the danger .
For some reason this year Marc the head ranger at madikwe safari lodge and I have had some amazing close encounters... which has been really bizarre ,as our philosphy with most of our subjects is to use long lenses so we can capture them behaving as natural as possible... we have had two white rhino walk up to us [2meter] while we had stopped for sunset gin and tonic... thank God they are so passive.. And a male lion who thought about using our open 4x4 as a stepping stone across a river... he was two feet from my head!! luckily he use a large boulder we were parked next too... dreading what is going to happen on our next trip...
