I photographed this duck today at a nearby lake in Kansas City, Missouri. It appears to be a diver, going down and coming back up several feet away from where it started. I thought at first it was a pied-bill Grebe but when I got home the description didn't match - and neither did the descriptions of any of the other ducks in my limited avian library. Even a search on the Internet didn't give me any hints.

Anyone know? And is it male or female?

Thank you, Paul. I saw canvasbacks online but they were all the males so that didn't help. Thanks so much!
