My critique: HA not ideal and lower angle would be better. The latter would have been difficult. Some crop off the top but I was trying to keep 8X10. ?Little halo around the face. Catchlight is natural.I was on a golf course in front of a tee kneeling on the ground, when 3 gents were about to tee off and advised I move for sake of my head.
Love it, thought it might be a tad underexposed but you were protecting white highlights (well done). Sun angle created dark shadows in black areas, maybe they can be opened up a tad with S&H? Not to worry, I like the light angle, it adds texture to the head feathers which is the center piece of his beauty. Like exposure techs, maybe open up more by plenty sharp. What a great picture of a fantastic duck,..you were definitely under par that day.
Agree with your self critique - still a very nice duck. Halo can be fixed in PP. Love that red eye.
Blacks look like they might be blocked in a couple of spots (havent checked)
Hi Ray,
You summed up the techs. quite well. I like the image and capture. The color rendition is good, and I like the sharp details, head angle, and direct sharp eye contact. Looking forward to your next one...
One extra comment ... why would you want to keep the 8x10 ratio? Really shooting yourself on the foot, even if you decide to print the image it is going to look odd. I crop to taste and leave it at that. For framing I know its a pain since you need custom mats but everything has a price !!!!
.... btw that is not just a duck .. I think they are super stars !!! Neat ducks !!!
Beautiful bird, well captured! Techs noted, and I agree with Alfred about the 8x10. It would look better with some off the top. I often save a version at 8x12 ratio and try to leave a bit of room to crop to 8x10 or 5x7 formats for future uses, but also save a version cropped for the best presentation of the image knowing it will look better when posting on the web, and will require a custom mat. -I'd be interested to know what others do.
Love the big red eye and the feather on the head, the droplets on the body add to the image too. The only black that block is the one behind the neck. The image feel oversharpen to me. What is in its beak by the way, a plant?
