My take on the 7D

Thank you for your review, it was one of the things that finalized my decision to purchase a 7D. Now that I have it I find that your review was very accurate in all your assessments. I feel that the 7D is quite a nice upgrade from my 50D, and I feel that Canon has finally delivered excellent autofocus in a reasonably priced camera. It is also loaded with other features and upgrades from the 50D series. I am particulalry pleased with 100% viewfinder.

I have had my 7D for more than two weeks but just had the chance a few days ago to give it a BIF workout. I found just what Greg has said in his blog. Although I had a ridiculous situation where two Sandhill Cranes flew BEHIND a tree and the camera kept focus, it did not focus or gave up trying in some situations where I thought it should have been OK. I have been using Centre Focus as it seems to be better for me, probably because I used to using it. I got adventurous enough to use the left and right lower points as well and it did take me a bit to get used to keeping those points on the flying birds but they certainly helped with composition.

I find the noise, or lack of noise, at higher ISOs to be surprising and welcome. I don't really know the lingo for the different kinds of noise but there isn't as much color noise with this camera as in my 40D and 1DMK2N. Also, the background OOF areas have a more painterly feel. That must be a result of pixel number.

I really light the weight and feel of the camera.

I have found the exposure meter to lead to overexposure and have to watch the histogram carefully on my copy.

Hi,

Last Thursday, i was able to take my first shots ever with an 7D during a local dealer's Expo. I was a bit worried about 18mp, but not after this shot. This was just a shot straight out of the camera at ISO1600 at f/5.6 with an 18-200mm lens. So, i'm impressed with this result, but i was even more impressed with how responsive the camera was.
Greg, i used your Northern Cardinal picture, cropped it a lot and was delighted with the result. Thanks for your report.
