One of our bird coordinators hand-reared this Red Wattlebird. Now as far as wild birds go, this girl (I hope it's a shee as it's impossible to tell) hangs around her 11 acre Blue Mountains bush property and behaves just like any wild Wattlebird would. That is, it eats the nectar from flowers (it's a honeyeater) and at the first hint of danger it takes off for cover. The strange thing is that it still likes to sit on people's shoulders at times as I found out. I was photographing it and suddenly it flew straight to me and started to put her bill into my mouth as if looking for food. Lucky I was sucking on a sugary candy as the sweetness kept her coming back for more. Now I know how the flowers feel once their human (errr. floral) rights have been violated by these naughty birdies. :D I was astonished and within a minute she flew off into a flowering gum tree to feast on the nectar-laden flowers. Go figure! What a little friend. :)
