Taken a few weeks ago while it was sitting on a big chunk of cedar driftwood. 50D, 400mm at f/8, 1/1500, ISO 400. Cropped vertical from a horizontal with a bit more taken off the bottom. Dave

I like the light, pose and sharpness. Was a higher angle possible? I'm undecided about the OOF grass in the BG and think there is a magenta cast. Is this pre-firmware update?
The perch is great because of the lichen. The HA does not bother me,but the isolated blades of grass are disconcerting. If not against your values could probably be removed. After grass removed then would crop down from the top.
Nice bright image great realistic color for this subtle bird.
Chas.
I might have cropped this as a horizontal (assuming you have more image to work with on the left), with the bird more on the right, looking into the frame and the perch trailing out of the lower left. As it's a small subject, it appears lost in this crop for me?
The lichens are nice, but they appear a bit hot to my eyes.....perhaps a light touch of burn on the perch in total?
Depending on your photoshop processing ethics, the grasses could (should IMHO) go and this would work well as a vertical or horizontal (as Jim suggested) if you have more image left. I do like the perch and there is a slight halo around the bird from sharpening I guess. Congrats! :)
great advise above and lovely repost by Akos

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. And thanks Akos for the repost. It is interesting how you have changed/darkened the perch. I debated removing the grass, but opted not to crop even more.
I have hesitated to download the 50D firmware update. The last time, 1.03, I needed to micro adjust the lenses again. Dave

Akos's repost is a big improvement, I would also be tempted to do a some cw rotation. TFS
