    Default Use of remote trigger?

I've been to several locations recently where there've been other photographers with long lenses mounted on Wimberley-equipped tripods. Almost all of them were using a remote cord to trigger the camera, and I'm wondering why. All of us were tracking birds flying, and it seems to me that if we were all tracking BIF with the gimbal heads, i.e. hands on the camera whilst tracking, what's the advantage of using the remote cord?

I've seen it done, but I have no idea what the purported advantages are.

I find using a cord is of no benefit in the situation described... actually I find it cumbersome and debilitating to smooth panning.

I use the chord when I am using mirror lockup. Definitely not for birds in flight or while panning.

It’s certainly not a tool for BIF or panning photography but I attach mine each time I go in the woods. I find it very useful for stationary subjects. I don’t care how steady you are, if you have your hands on the equipment, you will get some shake.

Thanks for your responses! I'm relieved to see that I wasn't missing something here... I know that the use of the remote is essential to making long exposures with MLU (I've using it for that for years too) but the use of it in BIF situations just didn't make any sense.

And, if it is windy and your hands are not on the equipment ? No, definitives....use the method that best suits the circumstance.

Liveview remote trigger - have you seen the hero phototix product.

Wireless Video remote trigger - works up to 100m away - have one just not tested it yet though - bought it at a trade show a while back.

This remote from Phottix Hero is very interesting, you are the only one that I have heard that actually has one , I thought it was vaporware !!!
These remotes will be perfect for a blimp/balloon project (unmanned aerial photography) that I am studying to make myself, the advantage is that it shows you remotely what you viewfinder is seeing , you press for focusing and you press for picture taking - from 100 meters away....wow.

    however it sure is expensive.

Please keep us posted when you get a chance to test it.

Hi - As I said I got mine from a photo trade show here as a sample unit $300 AUS which seems a lot cheaper than the 375 british pounds that I see on the website.
    Seems to work flawlessly too.
