    Default 7D Herring Gull

    Hi

The 7D arrived last week so I popped out at the weekend to give it a test run on the local gulls. The wind was blowing well which slowed the birds down a bit but the choppy water gave the AF something to think about. I haven't got round to the exicting task of AF microadjust so this it basically out of the box with AF tracking turned to slow. The AF seemed to perform well. My only real issue is processing the raw files which I really need to look into a bit more and experiment. DPP seems to produce better results in terms of noise and colour accuracy but its just not a software I have ever really liked. I converted some into DNG to loaded them up into Adobe 4.6 but was getting some strange white balance results, although thats hardly surprising.

    Taken with 7D with 500mm at ISO 400 F6.3 -1 EV and 1/2500s.

    Cheers

The eye certainly looks sharp enough and I like the running pose. It could use a bit of crop from below. I would have preferred that both wings were raised more fully.

Any word yet on how the noise compares to the 50D at 400 and 800?

I have seen excellent demos from the 7D and it seems it way outperforms the 50d and xt series and matches the 1d series on IQ and noise in upper ISO ranges. The only thing I am worried about is I fear the dynamic range may handle more like the 50 and less like the 1D series since the pixels are smaller. This shot is very nice - I might crop a bit from the bottom to include less of the OOF water in the forground. Great pose and eye contact.

    Enjoy your new camera.
I like the light (though its not ideal). running pose, sharpness and the small waves.
As mentioned, less room on the bottom would improved. some more room on the right and left would improved as well.

Hi Artie, my brother is shooting his 7D at 800 with no noise and 1600 with minimal noise that is removed with Noiseware.

I was shooting at 1600 with little noise; hope to post some images in the next few days.

Nice to talk to you; had a great time with Jim and James.
    Cheers, Jay

Thanks for the comments. I have a 50D, and the 7D is a good improvement in terms of noise at least at ISO 400. I have not had chance yet to use at high ISO settings. It seems a good camera to use and makes the mk4 an exciting prospect for Canon users.

    Cheers
