Pretty neat idea, I like the 'perch', head angles and light. Could you have gotten a bit higher? I could also see this as a pano crop.

Well spotted, Marc. Wondering how this would look as a pano with much less sky and a little less giraffe.
higher ISO on the D3 would give a faster SS on the 500 with no real noise penalty.

Good points by Axel and Tony. I would definitely go with a tighter pano crop.

Yes, the composition of the repost is definitely stronger.

This is outstanding! Wonderful story and feel. What was the difference in the two shots you posted Marc? Marc the biggest thing that I see that you should consider is the fact the picture is out of balance. The right is heavier than the left. At least the center bird should be dead on center but even to the left of center a tad might be best. I pretty much prefer all the giraffe and would keep it as the strongest comp unit myself--mostly because it is very beautiful and interesting with the patterns. Plus consider this--forgetting that what they are on is a giraffe and liken it to a mountain. The more giraffe, the more "mountain", and the more it will look like they are on top of a mountain. Our eyes will journey and feast on the giraffes patterns and rove way up to those oxpeckers, which will give us a more realistic POV for how bigg the giraffe is that hey are sitting on. And we are used to looking up at birds so this will look ok. But slpitting comp power between the birds and giraffe equally just diminishes the power of both. So crop in or crop out--either way would improve I feel. I would even add giraffe canvas if you have it. Just some thoughts. I absolutely love the shot Marc.

I just LOVE seeing something totally different presented here. It's too bad you couldn't have gotten a little higher but this really works. It tells a great story.

Thank you for sharing this gem.

Oh that's so cool of a shot!! By that I mean to say--I love the repost!! But definitely explore the other comp possibility here I would say where the "mane" would look like a field of grasses with a tight in pano crop. Both versions have wonderful value. Sincere congratulations on this one Marc.

2nd repost is close to what I had in mind, Marc. Definite step up on the original posted. From a learning perspective it is nice to keep the original post intact so that subsequent viewers can read the comments in the context that they were given. Refreshingly original image.
