This past week I watched a documentary on PBS about the decline of red knots and the link with the horseshoe crab. It made me think of some of the red knot pictures I captured last fall and thought I would post one of them.

This image of the red knot in winter plumage was taken at Pea Island NWR in North Carolina last October during fall migration.

Canon 5D with 500mm and 1.4x, ground pod, ISO 200, 1/1250, f/8, -2/3 exp comp, AV mode, slight crop.

Thanks for viewing and comments welcomed.

Hi Lori! You did a good job getting low on this little fella'... I might crop this one a bit tighter, taking some off the rear, bottom, and front of the frame. I also wish the light angle was a little better, the angle here creates some heavy dark areas at his bill, crown and above his neck. I like the intimate feel to this image.

I think you could crop most, if not all, of the lower tan area. I like the low angle and feeding pose. We also had a couple of great productive days with a Red Kot in Ottawa this fall (fairly unusual species for us). Brings back good memories form then!

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I agree that a tighter crop would be good and will do that.
