This cow and numerous others were meandering along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park last fall, and as the sun set the fall colors reflected in the water surrounding this cow in some pretty nice light...

Sharp with loverly light and cow. The animal is too centered. By the book you should have pointed the lens to the left to put her back in the frame with lots of room to see into the frame. But with that rich blue water behind her I would have pointed the lens to the right to balance the image with more of that rich blue water.

Is the light rump patch typical?

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Artie - I appreciate your feedback. I have numerous images of this cow, including a few in vertical format, and will take a look at modifying the composition/crop to see how things look as you mentioned.

And... the light patch on the rump is typical for elk. :)

Aren't they beautiful??? I think the females are just as pretty. You got great light even in the water.
Agree with Artie on the compo.

A little tight and centered for my taste but you've caught her in some very nice light and complimentary, surrounding colors.

Great light and comp here John. With the head of the elk falling on the upper right PP and then looking back into the frame for balance the comp is pleasing. Having the elk framed looser with this comp would have looked centered. As it's framed it doesn't Well done!
