Are there speical card readers needed to get the most out of UDMA cards, or is the extra speed only apparent in loading the card from the camera when making images?
A UDMA card reader can make image transfer to your computer blazingly fast if you have UDMA memory. The combination of SanDisk Extreme IV memory and the Delkin UDMA CF card reader is pretty awesome!
Thanks Doug. I will plan to add this to my wish list for the holidays. I am using an Extreme 4 16 Gig card in my new 7D. I seems to take forever to upload those 25 MB files to my computer with my current card reader.
Ed,
I was looking for one for months (after using those cheap card readers for a while). I always had a few issues with those 19-in-1 card reader:
1. Flimsy quality
2. They needed a usb cable
3. Bent pins (in the CF slot) *biggest problem*
4. Transfer speeds
All of these were taken care of once I bought the CompuApps Omniflash UDMA CF reader based upon recommendations from some peers. Image transfer of my 7D raw files is a breeze now, I get anywhere from 20-30 MB/S rates with this card reader (with my 8GB Extreme III cards).
It does only 1 job( CF card read/transfer) but it does it well. It's a bit pricey compared to the earlier ones I've owned, ~$33, but worth it !!
The slot is tight enough so the CF card does not rattle while going in and it goes in dead straight...without bending any pins....a highly necessary feature for me. Size is compact and portable.
I bought a Lexar UDMA CF reader. I performed a performance test. I had 42 RAW files from a 50D. They took over 6 minutes to download with a conventional CF reader. It took only 45 seconds with the UDMA reader! If you have a card full of a day's shooting of birds (and we all know how many images that could be), the UDMA reader is a blessing! Mine cost about $25.00.
