This is one of the 'vultures' of the southern oceans and, like some vultures, has been well and truly pasted with the ugly stick. This was taken on a pelagic last weekend off South Australia.

    Rob:

He seems to have a certain cartoonish charm to me. :)

Although the light looks fairly soft, it would be nice to bring up the shadowed areas a bit, if the noise profile will allow.

From a comp. standpoint, I basically like it, might move the bird just a fraction lower in the frame, but same left to right positioning, just a personal taste issue.

It is interesting that so many birds in this category (scavengers) are not very pretty.

I like the detail in the beak and the eye looks good. Agree w/ Randy regarding the shadowed areas. Nice looking BG and I like the composition.

I also agree with the shadows if possible but do not agree with the ugly comments. I always loved the look of tubenoses and he's no exception, but then again I also find Turkey Vultures pretty birds. I'd lighten the iris a bit to make his eye pop a little more. Congrats

It's always a treat to see seabirds. I like the eye contact, sharpness and BG. I might put the bird a bit lower in the frame and lighten the shadows a bit.

Good sharp detail on the head area Rob, and great eye too. Interesting looking beak, and agree, moving him down a tad will work.

Good eye contact (I think he's sizing you up), sharp and good wing position.
