Default Landing Willet- EOS 7D sample

This photo was made a few hours ago with my EOS 7D and 400 f/5.6L, f/6.3 1/2500sec ISO 400. Zone AF mode, tracking set to slow+1.

The EOS 7D does produce sharp photos but only in certain conditions. Read my full analysis here if you are interested.

AF issues aside, I like the wing position, eye contact, and raised foot. You might be able to pull a little more detail out of the darks. And I'd probably do a bit more NR on the BG. Thanks for sharing!

    Hey Doug,

This is just straight from DPP, I had no time to run NR or pull the shadows, I will process these and post more later. Thanks for your nice comments :D

Arash, once you get around to what Doug already mentioned plus some cw rotation and sharpening you will have a winner here. Love the wing position, raised foot and catch light. Congrats

Ah another Canon with AF problems or am I imagining things based on some recent posts here and some user comments? I'll wait until they fix the submirror's submirror this time and get the next 1D right - not that I think anything is wrong with the MkIII at all BTW. :D

Overall, I like this image Arash. Nice pose and perhaps a touch more sharpening would work well. :)

Well timed for the landing, and the skiing action across the water. I like the raised foot, and agree regarding the rotation. I find the wings are sharper than the head and body.

Why noise in ISO 400? There shouldn't be any at ISO 400.

    I like the wing position.

    I like the wing position.
The original is very clean (noise cannot be zero though) the fine grain you see is a result of unsharp mask after down sampling, I will clean it up.

Thanks Stuart, the entire bird is actually equally sharp, I will clean this up and post a 100% crop, it was a quick post sorry for not cleaning things up.

I updated the photo, cleaned up, rotated and crop. Shadows raised.

just my 2 cents, but to me it looks like the focus is somewhere on the wing. This is the impression I had with the initial picture and it's the impression I have with the 100% crop for sure. The head is softer than the wing.

Just for my curiosity. Is this considered as tack sharp ?

In this case the focus point was closer to head than wing. Remember that this has no sharpening, here is what it looks like after sharpening in DPP, Note that the head of a Willet has finer detail than the coarse feathers of the wing, so some of this is just your perception. Nevertheless I expect the camera AF to do a better job, but this is still pretty good compared to the OOFs that I got.
