Last week sidestepped the crowd around the limpkin chicks and came across this tricolor making passes over the water. Canon 40D, 100-400mm, 1/1600, F5.6, ISO400 (hh)

    Hi Michael,

The wings are simply amazing. The BG is fantastic too. The bird's head looks a little soft but perhaps a little more sharpening will do it!

Beautiful wing span, but I too see this image as being a bit soft.

Great pose and BG. Wish for more eye contact and another vote for more sharpening.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I don't have much experience sharpening images, but I have used the USM and hope this result shows some improvement.

Thanks, Axel; that is certainly sharp and I don't know how to achieve that with USM. Are you doing something other than USM, or if USM, what settings?

Stunning topside view of the tri-color Michael and I do like the repost as it brings out some wonderful detail. great capture Michael.

I used "Smart Sharpen" in CS3, 150, 0.3 and lens blur.

Very night flight image. I like it better after some needed sharpening. Although, I think the head might be slightly out of focus. His back is razor sharp, while his face doesn't have the same amount of detail. DOF is 2/3 trailing, so hitting his back (while face seems to be on a seperate plane of focus, more forward), there may not have been enough DOF at f/5.6... Maybe I'm over-thinking this... I should sleep more... I really do like the image though ;)
