Haven't been in Avian for a while and since the weather is lousy here in NJ I am going through a few files from last summer.
This was at Nickerson beach one morning with a lot of feeding going on.

Canon 1D Mark lll with the Sigma 300-800mm at 800mm and 1/2500 sec. at f6.3 and ISO 800 all tripod mounted lowered to the ground.

Good feeding pose, I like the fact we can see inside the Oystercatcher's mouth. Looks a litle ragged with those misplaced feathers - rough breeding season! I'm sure your tripod was at its lowest, but have you ever considered handholding while lying flat on the ground for an even lower perspective? :-)

    Hey Daniel.
I have tried hand holding the 300-800 and have had OK success (I'm not quite sure I want to try that often though as it doesn't have IS) but short of laying it on the ground (which I have done) I won't get any lower...even with my ground pod. At Nickerson at sunrise the slope is also away/down from me.

Also do realise that I am not the biggest fan of having sand/stuff cutting the legs off on the ground perspective....so while photographing birds...... pretty sure I was about as low as I am comfortable with.
As I am not the birder.....I don't really place much emphasis on perfect specimens..so will take your word on missing feathers.....I am more interested in the action (jumkie there!) but I do appreciate the input and suggestions!

Fair explanantion :-) It just felt like it could go lower without cutting off legs and feet, but I understand the sloping away beach thing. I do like it as is though (plus I'm sure that rig can be tough to handhold).

P.S. as a bird photographer I'm always hoping for perfect specimens...but sometimes you work with what you got, especially when presented with single individuals.

VNice Roman - exposure looks spot on, love the action, sharp and nice details - like it a lot.

Looks low enough for my tastes - that said I just ordered the really right stuff ground pod - I do like to get low and it doesnt matter what in -LOL.

    :)

    Hi All and thanks!
Daniel, I didn't mean anything by what I explained.....truth be told....I'm not sure I would know the difference:eek:! I agree that I always want the perfect species.....just no sure I could identify it and want input from everyone here so I know what to look for!.......so Thanks again!

Wonderfully exposed and food item a big plus, I love beat up looking plumage and yours is great here. I feel it adds character and individuality to the bird. Not sure I'd want to HH your rig for long but I too wished for a lower angle. Congrats
