    Hi all,

This image was recorded last week in the Masai Mara region of Kenya. It spent several minutes hammering away at the tree until eventually it unrooted the bug.

    C&C welcome and appreciated.

    Thanks

    Austin

Excellent catch, Austin. That beetle larva looks like quite a prize. Light angle was a bit of a challenge. Fill flash with a BB may have been an option. Have tried a version with fairly aggressive shadow adjustment on shadow/highlights to give an idea of how it would look with a bit more light in the shaded areas.

Nice behavior captured Austin! I like what Tony did on the repost, although I might try to find the middle ground with just a little less Shadows/ Highlights work.

Great bird and insect too. Difficult light, you did quite well. Agree that fill flash would do great here.
Tony's re-post is on the right track to fix the shadow. Just a tad of HA would be great too.
    Very nice action captured...

Good capture with the prey. In my opinion your vertical presentation was a good choice. Good comment above. With the light angle you had a bit of fill flash might have helped with the shadows. Thanks for sharing.

Great find, action, BG and sharpness. I agree that lightening the shadows improves the image.

Repost looks better IMO. Light was harsh and that feather sticking out is less than ideal aesthetically, IMO.
Nice species and natural moment. Congratulaitons!

Nice moment captured Austin. I agree that the repost is an improvement. You do not show your exposure method here and these difficult lighting situations, I find it best to use the histogram to assist, shooting the rights as far as possible without clipping to get as much detail as possible in the shadows remembering that it is much easier to extract detail from the highlights than from shadows in PP.

    Hi Austin

I wondered what species this was when you mailed me the image, now I know I agree with the S/H on the repost has lifted the image. A great pose and action with the bug in beak.

    Cheers

    Rich
