    Default Sandpiper Preening

I did a B&W layer then added some contrast and then a find edges filter. I blended the two w/ the darken mode. Then I painted in the eye(which was all black in the orig.)just to give it some dimension.

Hi Denise, very nice effect. It is an interesting perspective. I like the low angle and that eye. Excellent pp.

pleasing perspective and pp. The color tones give the feel of a very cool beach.
Nice eyework and I like the few waterdrops at the feet

Very nice, Denise. I like the pose and subtle effect. I would just run a little NR on the BG.

Denise, it is a nice effect. Could you explain the reasoning behind the B&W layer?

Christopher, You are right. It looks better w/o the grain. Thanks:)

Roy, When you use find edges sometimes the B&W layer helps to define the edges a bit more(sort of like when you use channels to extract a subject from the BG) adding more contrast seems to help also.
Below is a link to an image of mine that was tweaked by William Maroldo. I use the find edges filter alot and the B&W layer does help w/ some images.

    Hope that helps.

Denise, thanks for the explanation, I'll put that in my todo list.:) That other post you mentioned contained a great deal of info as well. Thanks again.

Hi Denise, Nice feel to the image due to the nice lighting and filter effect. Good blurred backround shot at a low angle. My preference would be some cropped off the top...

Denice, The PP effects are very nice, and it doesn't hurt that the photo is wonderful to start with - great DOF and background and you caught a perfect pose.

I'll add my thanks for the explanation and the link to the other thread. This is something that I need to try out.

Even before OOTB treatment, this is a well-composed low-angle cool-color shot of a preening sandpiper. Adding in the eye is a great idea - their eyes usually don't show while preening - so we get connected to the bird. I'm inspired now to try the find edges filter and up the contrast against B&W BG - thanks for the link. I like the painterly effect, Denise, nice work!

I'm late to the party for this one, Denise. I really like the composition, the soft background, and the painted eye. Nice job with the repost.

Very pretty Lady D! Lovely pose and the colors are soothing.

    I thought the technique looked awfully familiar! Nice pose, color hues, and composition. About the background;
I tend to look at this type of image as sort of a digital watercolor, and as in traditional watercolors a "grainy" background, which seems to impart a textural feel, is an asset. Therefore, I would not remove the digital counterpart, noise, from the background. Just my two cents. regards~Bill

Bill, The B&W layer was genius and I use it often- TFS.
