    Morkel:

Happy birthday. I hope your cake looks better than whatever this guy is eating!

Nice exposure, sharp on the eye, but DOF on mandibles not there. (despite f/8). You must have been in close.

Not sure what is going on around the upper mandible, whether you cloned something, or just a localized abnormality in the BG.

    Enjoy your day!!

Hey Bro! A huge congrats and Happy Birthday! Man, I am sending you a red dust storm to celebrate! :D (kidding). I hope your better half has approved more camera gear for this royal occasion! :)

love the image, sharp and good details. I wonder about that green patch too, most likely just BG. I'd do something with that. Wish you had more DOF to get all the bill sharp. Nevertheless a terrific image. :)

    Enjoy the day/night... .... ....

thanks for the wishes everyone. I actually am disappointed with the bill not being in focus totally. Noticed in during PP but uploaded more as a fun post anyways. The green patch is BG - should probably have taken it out :)

my wife actually organised a surprise party for me last night, my first ever - woohoo :)

Akos - I think your dust storm picked up some moisture on its way across the Indian Ocean cause it started belting thunder and rain last night :)
And my wife will probably approve of some new gear after Christmas...

Happy Birthday Morkel! I am not the first, but won't be the last one to wish you as certainly there would be many more. Good to hear that you are getting some more photo gear. If you want any suggestions for creating/enhancing your wish list, we are all ready to volunteer. :D

    Cheers,

Many happy returns of the day Morkel.
Interesting bird you have there. By the way how many species of hornbills are found in South Africa? We have only 7 or 8 over here in Malaysia.
Picture perfect if not for the bill as you and the others have spotted. I see yours has the mascara as well.

Morkel, happy birthday! Nits covered, I like the shot - so typical of Kruger.

Phil, according to my Newman's Birds of Southern Africa, we have 10 species of hornbills.

A belated happy birthday Morkel! In case you're wondering we have zero species of hornbills in the USA! :D

Sabya - you can fire away with the suggestions - as long as you don't tempt me to switch brands ;)

Again, a belated happy, happy to you Morkel. More than just a fun image. Great feather detail, colours and love that eye. Bill covered. I'm a Canon girl myself. Nikon has got nothing that comes close to my cherished MP E.:)
