    Default Semipalmated Plover

Semipalmated Plovers often nest in rather disturbed sites so the background/substrate can be less than photogenic. The birds on the other hand make for pleasant subjects. This one was from last summer at Barrow.

I like the angle, sharpness, eye contact and don't find the BG distracting at all. I would remove the magenta cast and lighten the iris a bit.

Declan, Really nice image and your pose looks good. I like the repost but I might add just a bit of warmth to the image if it were mine. I'd evict the small stick at the left. Very nice and sharp.

Repost looks much better, have you updated your 50D to the lastest firmware version? (Magenta cast is less with new firmware). I'd remove the one stick and loosen up the crop if you've got the room...feels a bit crowded to me.

Lovely low angle and eye contact. I would blur the bottom edge of the frame to give it a bit more depth.

Ah that stick. I too find it annoying and expected the suggestion to come up. Alas, I'm part of the fringe with great reluctance to add/remove objects so I can't bring myself to do it.

Grace, I think I'm up-to-date 1.0.7 but that came out while I was in the field this summer so perhaps this image came from before I updated. Thanks for pointing that out.

Arash, if you look carefully at the two images you will notice that I actually cropped more off the bottom of the repost to lessen the blur! Perhaps I should have gone the other way. Depth I like but didn't like the effect on this substrate.

Thanks all for some excellent feedback. Don't know how I let that magenta cast slip by.
