During our recent trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, we had some gorgeous light and some stunning clouds on some of the days. As a budding landscape photographer whose first love photographically is wildlife, I couldn't resist attempting some 'combos' :). Call them 'animalscapes' if you will.
This is a B&W conversion of a shot taken during almost midday. I have many different compositions of this scene of the blue wildebeest standing solitary on a dune with those lovely clouds, and in many cases the colour versions come out tops in my preference. I will post some more in due time, but here I liked the tones and the enhancement of the lines made by die B&W conversion.
I would like to know what you think, and also what could be done to improve - specifically in the B&W tonal adjustments?

Hi Morkel. Very strong image! Great silouette and placement within the image. IMO it's the clouds that really make the image with wispy, diagonal flowing lines. Excellent choice to convert to B&W!
Hey Mork, well thoughtout, and I feel your conversion works very well. Overall, super comp, with the majority of the comp showing the sky, and you have placed the wildebeest very well. Great image.
Interesting look Morkel. Great sky, especially for this effect. I like the way the bushes seem to be lined up and pointing in the same direction as the clouds. Neat shot.
Morkel, your recent trip has really produced some wonderful images. I love the graphic effect in this photograph especially with the contrast in the foreground working so well with the soft, wispy feel of the clouds. I agree with you about trying to incorporate landscapes with a bit of wildlife … lifts both to new heights IMHO.
Morkel,
This is a lovely image. The diagonal patterns in the sky is terrific. I like the composition and the black and white conversion makes it over the top.
Morkel, I hope the SA tourist board is compensating you as these images so make me (and I'm sure others) want to visit and see the place. A stunning image, one could certainly experiment on adjustments but why bother, great as presented.
Excellent work. I did not find this mentioned but I like the extreme contrast in the FG (the ground) to the point of being hard to look at. I feel it contrasts (pun intended) with the overall look of the scene.
thanks Robert. I hadn't even looked at it that way but now that you mention it I think it's what adds to this image's appeal to me personally, and also to the sense of the place I wanted to convey. such a harsh country, yet more beautiful than mere pictures or words can attempt to convey...
:)
Killer killer image Morkel! Love almost everything about it. The sky makes for such a powerful scene, that I would be tempted to see how this would look like with a larger crop of the bottom. In this way I think you emphasize the sky that much more. Also if it fits your personal ethics I would see what this looks like without the darker shadowed plant on the right, as now I have the feeling that it competes with the wildebeast a little. Even though the way it is presented now is excellent already! Love it and congrats
just some midweek fun - it was mentioned on other forums that the extreme contrast could be toned down in the FG. I like it as is, but decided to play around with the idea, and this is the result...
