From a birding perspective this an exciting species, "wanted" by many N.American birders, and not often photographed on this side of the "Pond". This one was harassing gulls, while on a pelagic trip out of Halifax, Nova Scotia recently. On the other hand, as it's simply an image of a bird in an empty sky, with no background or context, as a photograph do people think it's boring?
D300, 80-400VR, hand-held on a rolling fishing boat, and quite a heavy crop.1/4000, f/6.3, ISO 800
Shutter speed to burn here - would have swapped some of that for some DOF - especially as the BG was free and clear - Looks like the point of focus may have been on the near wing as it appears sharpest to my eyes - head area is a tad soft.
Have you used some shadow/highligh recovery - seeing some noise under the wings/tail area and the whites on the foreground wing are pusing the envelope a little.
A tough one when shooting from a boat that you have no control over - you are at the mercy of what is presented to you.
Beautiful bird, too bad the odds where not on your side w/the boat and all. The bird just seem OOF to my eye. Was this the only shot that you got? TFS and keep them coming:)
You have a nice wing position here, too bad this is a large crop otherwise you will have more details. Do you shoot RAW? With RAW you maybe able to save some shadow and highlight details.
