Default Dunlin + a unique strategy.

I was glad to stumble upon this Dunlin at a local beach while walking with my two boys this past weekend. To get it in a good clean area I setup in a strategic spot and had my sons go back and slowly follow it along the shore from about 10 yards behind it...effectively pushing it towards me. The boys had huge smiles and laughter...and both wondering why the Dunlin wasn't flying away but rather keeping its distance on foot. Their first true shorebird behaviour lesson :-)

It was very accomodating (FF at 210mm!). Once used to our presence it just fed as if we weren't there. After a while, even though the bird was very relaxed, I explained to the boys that we should leave it alone and left the area. Everyone happy, and great quality family time too:).

    Canon 40D + 100-400L @210mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/800s., f/7.1, ISO400, +0.3 EC, natural light, handheld.

Sometimes I wish I had some bird herders, too. :) I like the angle, walking pose and eye contact and might try to lighten the eye a bit.

Daniel, I usually wait for them-but I would love to have some herders also! Great BG colors and beautiful details and pose.

Excellent close-up with perfect focus about the bill and face. Intersting tactics too.

Good job to get the head and whole bill sharp. I like the pose. Useful technique - time outdoors with kids is special.

Lovely detail.....and he even has a rather coy look to him. Love the idea of bird herders.......I see a possible summer job for them in the right area. Well done with the bird.....and the herders.

Dan love the sharpness on the head and that raised foot really adds to this. BG is silky smooth. I'd take a small slice off the left.

I've been using my son and occasionally my wife as shorebird herders all year and really helps get close to the little guys.

Great story and lovely shot, the sharpness really stands out in this one. Might have been nice to see the left raised leg, which I also like in this shot, a bit more in focus, but very well done nonetheless and lighting is great.

Been there, done that Love the bird, the light and the pose. I am fine with the eye sharp. I like the gold/blue BKGR.

Can anyone age this bird, i.e., let us know the plumage stage? (I can )

    Great strategy Dan!

Lovely bird and BG. There seems to be some artifacts around the beak, may be compression for web?

I like the angle of approach Dan, and good to see the raised foot showing movement. Lovely light, and colours too. Well captured.

This is so nice Daniel. I love the foot up walking pose and the lighting and detail kill. I have tried to get my son to come help push shorebirds my way too but he gets bored in about 2 minutes and than whines about going home so I don't do that anymore!! :(

Thanks Artie (and everyone else)! Judging by the rufous tinge combined with some black on the scapulars and also the spotting on the chest, I'm gonna say it's a young one - perhaps getting into its 1st winter plumage with all that gray?

Way to go Dan. The bird is pretty much molted into first winter plumage; all of the juvie feathers but for the great saddle, just like many of the gulls.

Great image Dan. The next time that we head out to Ottawa Beach perhaps you should bring the boys! :D;)
