    Default treading water

It is such a joy to see the Bonaparte's Gulls moving through our area again. They are on their way to wintering grounds and stop in the Bay of Fundy to feed on herring and krill. By this time of year they have moulted into their winter, Basic plumage like this one. I often try to capture the birds alighting from the water, which produces the foot splashes.

Here I cropped a little, lightened the eye, and ran some NR on the water.

Very nice shot, great exppsure, light, detail and that water splash is a great plus. I only wish you could've gotten lower, althought it is not alawys possible. Congratualitons!

    John:

Nicely timed. I like the two distinct splashes, wing position, nicely exposed as well.

    Cheers

Thanks to all! Forgot to mention I was in a boat, handheld, no IS on this lens and the water was fairly "loppy" as they say around here. That explains the ISO and shutter speed chosen. The gunwales of the boat were a little less than 1m/3' above water so couldn't get any lower than that.

Beautiful shot John, love the wet feet and eye contact. Would sharpen a bit more.

    Thanks again to all.

Arash- On my monitor the image looks as sharp as I would want it to look. The wingstips are OOF due to DoF. Does the head, body, feet and water look soft on your monitor? I just did my normal (non-aggressive) round at the end of processing and would be reluctant to push further for fear of producing halos etc- but I will experiment and push a bit more to see what I can learn.

Wasn't there a discussion a while back on sharpness and how monitors can be quite different. FWIW, I do all my processing on an (older) 17" Apple Cinema Display.

    Hi John,

It doesn't look soft but usually I see a little bit more detail in the belly area feathers and under the wings but it might just be the light. I agree it depends on the screen, Apple screens have different gamma so the contrast is a bit different too. It's a nice shot any ways. TFS
