This Osprey interrupted my very serious game of bocce ball yesterday when he landed on a branch above to consume his catch. Luckily, my camera was nearby and I was able to get this shot as he left the branch.

    Nikon D90, 300mm f/4 + 1.4TC @ f5.6, 1/2000s, -0.3EV, iso 250, ~15 degree CW rotation
The low iso saved this shot as it was a fairly large crop.
I'm not sure I've chosen the correct crop for this one. Also not sure if the branch needs to stay.
Looking forward to your comments :)

    Graham:

How rude of him to interrupt your game. :)

Nice take off pose, with enough wing blur to imply the motion. Talons show very well.

The light was harsh (note dark shadows) but you held the exposure pretty well.

The eye could stand a bit more sharpening.

I like the concept of showing the perch he blasted off from, but this perch doesn't do much for me. If you have more of it, esp. a little room beneath, or were it joins the trunk, I would be interested in seeing that as an alternative crop.

Good to have the camera nearby at all times!

I like the branch as it shows a reason for the pose. I can see some detail in the hot chest whites and wonder if a little dodging would bring out that detail?

Hey Graham, I would have interrupted my game too if I was there!

I don't mind the branch but I'd like to see more room beneath it. I also wish for a slightly better HA, and I would desat the sky a bit as it is pushing "electric". Cool wing positions, and great view of the talons!

Scott - I think you mean "burn" rather than "dodge" as dodging lightens things up :-)

Moment well captured. pity about the harsh light. I like the pose and comp.

    Interesting suggestions - thanks!
Yes, lighting was harsh - I did some shadow lightening and it helped a great deal.
I agree the eye could use some more sharpening too.
My inclination was to add more room above since he was taking off upwards from the perch, however the consensus appears to be that adding below is more appropriate...
