    Default 800mm bag

Sorry for the copy cat post but need some help in picking a bag.

I currently have the Lens Trekker 600 AW II but I am forced to use the Canon Lens Case 800 for checkin because the Lowepro is 5 inches too big and 1 pound too heavy for carry on (as per airlines 45-inches and 7kg only).

I'd prefer to hand carry my lens minus the body and everything else. Any recommends on a bag is useful. The 800's 4.5kg/9.9lbs already so the bag has to be 2.5kg/5.5lbs or lighter

not a bag but you could probably use the pelican 1510 hard case as it will work as a carry on, I am sure the hood wont fit as the 500 one barely fits

the lens is 18" and the inside of this is 19 3/4", it weighs about 12lbs though, but most places never check the weight

Pao, if I need to travel light and carry my 500 f4 in carry on I sometimes use a ThinkTank Big Bazooka, its actually a tripod case and you can change the length to fit what you are carrying. I dont think the Big Bazooka would take 800mm lens but the Humongous Bazooka might, worth a look anyway ...

Bag sans padding and lens with hood and two caps and a wimberly plate is 800 grams overweight. To hand carry I need a bag that's 1.5 kgs or less.

7 kgs only :eek:. What airline is that. I will make sure to stay way clear. Thats why I ended up with the 500mm. Hope you get some luck, but I cannot think of one bag that would meet your requirements, unless you got it special made. That might be your only chance.

It's an inter-island domestic flight on a Airbus A320 of Philippine Airlines. 7 kilograms on hand carry and now 15 kilograms on check in. :( Sad how fuel prices and the bad economy is screwing everything. But great for cheap fares if you're not bringing gear along.

I brought my Lens Trekker 600 AW II and the Canon Lens Case 800 as check in. Talked to the counter person and they're ok with Lens Trekker even if it is 5 inches too big. They don't mind the 1 kilogram overweight so long as I say it is camera gear. Guess they don't want the hassle of busted up gear. They didn't approve my the Canon Case though.

    Pao,
I faced the same problem with Singapore Airlines. They were strict about the 7kgs. They weighed my bag 3 times and then finally allowed me. Next time I took Malaysian Airlines, and nobody bothered to check. :D I had my 400 f2.8 L IS (5.3 kgs itself) + 300mm f4 L IS (about 1.5kgs) plus, 28-135, 1.4 and 2x converters, 580 flash, lenovo 17 inch laptop, with chord, external hard disk etc. Also I had my 1DII and 3 batteries (1.5kg+) . All these were cramped into the heavy lowerpro computrekker which was about to burst. So I agree that we ought to know which airlines are photographer friendly. :D

I am evaluating the Kiboko of Gura Gear. The only issue is the lack of laptop compartment.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi

I have the LowePro AW600 as well as the hardcase HPRC (pelican similar) and are compliant in size for cabin. The EF800mm slips into both perfectly. With the hardcase you can still fit 3 bodies, a flash unit, quantum turbo powerpack and wimberley flash bracket. As for the weight you will need to get a letter before travel from the airline head office in your city and this should quell any issues with check in staff.

Within South East Asia, most airlines are quite reasonable when they see the lens through x-ray machines but inter-continental can be a pain especially to/from Australia. Once you have the letter then you are good to go.
