I captured this Green Heron in the Pickney Nature Preserve just off of Hilton Head Island in SC. I watched the bird for a long time and saw an alligator fairly close to the bird but it never made a move toward the bird. I don't know if the heron knew it was there or not. It was a beautiful bird. I watched it for about an hour.
Picture taken with a Nikon D2X with the 200 to 400MM F4.0 VR lens at ISO 400, 1/750 sec at F8.0 I applied an exposure compensation of -1/3

    Hi Peter,

Nice Green Heron. Would have been great if you could have gotten lower to the ground.

A couple of issues that might be just processing problems actually. The body is exposed well but the legs are burned out. Also the duckweed background is hot on my monitor. And the last thing is that the head appears to be over sharpened a bit. Looks like it was selectively sharpened so you are on the right track. I start at 100-.3 or .4 -0 then reapply if needed.

Very nice as posted. I think lowering the exposure changed the WB just a bit. The bird looks a little blue because of that.

    Best,

    Jose

Nice image. A hint of a gator off to the right would justify the bird's gaze in that direction. Minus the gator, we need a head turn.

I am becoming less and less a fan of the way large expanses of green are rendered digitally. To me, they always come out looking too yellow and unnatural (may be why Jose perceives the bird as too blue) I would mask the bird and then get rid of the yellow cast in the green areas.
