Default Canada geese silhouette at sunrise

I would have liked to take more shots of this big group. But as I approached them, they separated and quickly flew off.

shot with 40d. 300 f/4L non-is and 1.4x. 1/1000. f/8. iso 200. adjusted contrast. color temperature and did some curves during raw conversion in DPP. almost full frame.

self critique: (a) should have used smaller aperture. (b) it would have been nice to have the ducks's heads parallel to the sensor plane (c) should have focussed on a bird in the middle of the pack (d) wish that one goose's head had not merged with another goose (e) more room on the left of the frame will make it better. (f) In hindsight, I think I should have removed my teleconverter and just shot at 300mm....it would have opened up lot of cropping options.

Let me know what you think. All critiques welcome and appreciated.

    Kaustubh:

Excellent self critique. You did well to only have the one bad merge. For me, the head angle is less critical in a silhouette image than a front lit image. Still desirable to have a good one, but not as essential.

More space to the left, yes, but not much. Easy to add canvas on this one.

I agree, if you were trying to create this specific shot, then no TC would have given you options. But, you often will lose the shot completely if you fiddle too much changing setups, so I am glad you got an image to work with.

The choice of color is interesting. I might have gone for the more traditional orange sunset, but this is nice as well.

I like the idea and your self-critique is spot on, particularly if we could see all heads it would work even better.

I like this, the mood is very nice. Since the bg birds are more in focus, what about cropping out as much of the fg birds and then do a little cloning to get rid of the leftovers?

Connie....I thought about that....but it would require too much cloning. I do a little cloning here and there...but dont like to do a whole lot. Just a personal choice.

Thx for the comments everyone. I will try playing around with the color temperature more. It was a misty morning and a little after sunrise. The water was more yellow than orange. Canvas is a good option...I am a little lazy when it comes to PP :-) I also wish there wasn't so much debris in the water....too many small black dots.
