    Default Barn Owl

    Hi There

Well this one is for Lana as she has mentioned before that she likes Barn Owls, I was trying out my MKIII in bright sunlight to see if the focus fix held up and it certainly appears to, it seemed quite happy to track birds in flight in bright sunlight or poorer light conditions, and i love the colours the files give. I will post some in flight captures over the next couple of days to give you an idea of how it was working

Hi, John, This is a very nice study of the barn owl, the focus on the eyes and beak are sharp and the catchlight adds to the effect. The exposure is on the dot. However, the purple BG makes the image appear somewhat artificial or like an image created in a studio. Don't what was in the BG to give such a colour.

Ohhhhhhhhhh.....I've been waiting for more Barn Owls. I've held off on the MkIII for now.....looks like yours is working great. This one is gorgeous.......beautiful color and detail. That head is so sharp. I, too am wondering what the BG was. It's a tad odd....but I didn't really notice it at first glance. Being as close as you were, I'd like a little more DOF. I can't remember if you use a tripod but at 1/2500 you could probably have sacrificed a little ss for some more DOF. Some may think this one is too tight......but I'm enjoying the complete view of the owl. Did you try a TC to get just a head shot?

This is breathtaking! Can't stop looking at the image! Too bad the legs are not in focus. Maybe a face crop would work. I think the 500 F4L is in my future but getting it past She Who Must Be Obeyed is going to be tricky.

    Hi Lana

Glad you like it, it was taken at my usual hang out of the Hawk Conservancy, the purple background is someone sitting in the seating around the flying ground wearing a purple fleece, buts its way out of focus coz i was shooting "as always wide open". It wasn't really a conscious portrait shot, he had just landed on the stump and was about to take off again so i was just a grab shot really. I actually like the purple background and i was glad i nailed the focus on the eyes.

As regards tripod i do the majority of my shots handheld as i find a tripod to restrictive for birds in flight at the flying demonstrations.

    Head Shot posted below

This makes a gorgeous portrait. Here the BG colors work much better than in the whole image. I give credit to those who can hand hold the 500mmL IS for a day of shooting. Flexibility is a definite advantage but I'll sacrifice that to avoid working out in a gym!!!

John, a gorgeous image with great sharpness and detail. I''d love a little bit more room at top to avoid a very tight feeling but a minor point.

    Hi John!

The details, tones and colors look great. I don't know if that particular combination is causing it, but the face and body almost look 3D to me ... very cool!

    Hi Maxis

Thanks for looking, but there was no flash used on this one just a rare sunny day over here in the UK.

Both are very nice, but I have to say I'm a much bigger fan of the portrait close up.

Fine work! Love the feathers framing his face and on top of his head which you really can see thanks to your sharp image.
