    Default crow

    D700
    70-200mm f2.8 VR with 1.7TC
    280mm
    ISO 1600
    f6.3 at 1/250s
    Manual mode
    Matrix Metering
    Auto white balance
    handheld

Adjust WB, darken a bit, clone out small part of another crow and tiny bit of grass, noise reduction, crop and sharpen.

The background was overexpose so I decided to go with sort of high key look. At first I have the whole crow but decided to crop off the feet and tail to have the background as pure white. Not sure if this work or not.

All comments and suggestions are welcome.

i think it works because of the powerful call and pose. some may say something about the blocked shadows of the legs, but i think the composition and subject outweigh that. i like this a lot, thanaboom!! dont know what i would do different!!!!

I really like this, but for me i would of did a tighter crop. Only because the rest of the body is not interesting enough for me, but love how the bird is calling out. Great job:)

I'm with Kyle here. It will work much better if it were just a head or head and shoulder shot. But, just so you know, personally I find that other than head or head+shoulder shot, usually cropped bird - especially cropped spread wings, tails - never work.

Great details and exposure though !

Tighter crop all the way is the way to go Easy to add a little canvas around the bird !! Love the detail in the black around the head, really nice !! For this a bit of fill flash sure would help out !!! Big Congrats on this one !!!

Did you use Shadows/highlights and Levels to open up the blacks.
Looks like light was behind or side angle. Great expression and head.

Actually I adjusted the curve the darken the crow even more. Yes, light was coming from the side and the background was reflection of the sun on a pond.

Here is the original image with simailar crop. The only thing I did is changing WB and save as JPEG from RAW.

Like the high key very much and the details in the feathers. Love the open beak and the tighter crop.

Very difficult exposure black on white, you did well considering the lighting. Bet the meter was having fun.

If the crow filled a large %'s of the frame, spot might have been an option if you had time. I like what you did with this picture. Very creative, and the expression is great, wish the feet were there.
