Cleaning up some old files and I came across this fellow in his fancy colors from a spring trip I took to Minnesota.

Very nice subdued light that is very becoming to the whites. You can count the feathers!
If this were mine, I'd crop some off the left to de-center the peli and selectively sharpen the head some more.
Love the hint of yellow in the plumage.

I agree with fabs about taking a bit off the left. How was that trip up to Minny?

Ditto Fabs. Lovely light, pose, and exposure. A slightly lower angle would be great, but this is pretty good as is.

He is beautiful! I would prefer a closer crop to show more details. But I do like showing the entire mound he is standing on. Wonderful!!

Thanks, Everyone. When I composed this image, I left the entire little mound in tact, thought it would look odd cropped, but I see your point. I did not get lower for this creation, as I wanted the silvery water for the background, lower yielded green trees, which was not my intention.

As for my trip to Minnesota, blue birds, hummingbirds, pelicans, black bears, loons, a great traveling partner, and a SUPER host!! THanks, Mike. Only thing I wished for was more time, a great state with great people.

Grace, I can see your concern about cropping at left, but I would still do it to strenghten the comp. If you are concerned about the mound looking "odd" when cropped, I find it helps it (IMO) if you also crop at bottom to have the mound anchored along the bottom of the frame. The pelican looks great, the bright overcast conditions sure made your job easier!

Such a strange looking bird.. love the pose, light and ambient here, some whites look hot in my monitor, I would suggest to tone them down. Congratulaitons!

Beautiful plumage! Love the hint of color in the whites. I'd also crop the left a bit.

I see why you left it.. think Daniel's suggestion makes it a bit stronger. Nice one to have in the files.

You are all 100% right about the crop, Daniel's hint about anchoring the bottom makes it work in my head. Many thanks! Strange how sometimes things that seem so important (leaving the entire mound, for ex) really are not, or just need modified. Appreciate your eyes and thoughts.
