Desmond, can you give us some idea what tones you used to produce this? Did you use a duo, tri, or quad combo? You got a lovely silver gray and it really compliments the lighting on the rose.

A touch of elegance. Looks like a straight black and white> Maybe I am missing something. Also there appears to be a halo surrounding the edges of the petals. At first I thought it was the edge of the petal but it seems to follow all the way around. May be over-sharpened.

    Yes, Julie !

I used Select > Color Range to select the hightlights > applied one color using Hue/Saturaion adjustment layer (colorize). Then do the same but inverse the selection so the mid-tone and shadows were selected > applied another color using the same method. Some call this split toning. I selected a warm tone for the highlights and a cool tone for the rest.

Thank you for the comments and suggestions !!

Very nice, Desmond! I like the slightly blueish tone, and the black BG sets off the flower perfectly.

I like how the rose pops out from the BG. Works well with the toning. Nice details.

I like the subtlety of the colors and against the black BG make this presentation very nice. Thanks for explaining your technique.

Very nice technique, Desmond! I have heard of split-toning but never tried it. I'll have to give it a go now!

    Thanks folks !

As in many other things with Photoshop, there're more than one way to get that split toning effect.
