Since the Hummingbirds are still here in spades and Linda Robbins' Guide to High Speed Flash Hummingbird Photography hasn't arrived yet, I decided to go after them without a flash. Here is the result and I don't think it is too bad. What is your opinions? Shooting data:

    1/2000 sec, f/4.5
    Mode: Av
    Metering: Spot
    Exp comp: -1/3
    ISO: 800
    White balance: Auto
    Flash: Off
    File size: 10,138KB
    Image size: 1148 x 730

    Wheeler:
I like the composition, the head just poking out of the wings.
To my eye, the birds head and eye aren't sharp. The back is too bright, as the large circular area behind the back, while the head is too shaded.

How big of a crop was this? The IQ seems to be suffering a bit, but I know the D700 should do very well with these settings.

Aren't hummers teasing but challenging targets!

Contrasty. This calls for Highlights/Shadows under Image-Adjust menu. Nice capture.

I would increase the saturation considerably, since the colors are not a vivid as I would expect. Otherwise, the pose and bkg are good.

This is a quick and dirty repost with color saturation increased.
