Well not that slow - but still think it fits with what we want to show - movement etc.

This one I was trying to create a flash blur of sorts.

    Nikon 300MM F2.8 With 1.7X Converter
    F5.6
    1/250th
    800 ISO
    Matrix Metering
    SB900 Manual Flash @ 1/16th
Shot lying on ground using a tree stump for a tripod.

Comments welcome - not everyone's cup of tea :)

This is one sweet image Mr. Peters, I like the motion wing blur...you have a good head angle and a sharp eye...love that perch...

Lovely colors and very good details for blur image. Some how the image gave me a feeling of the bird miss landing on the perch. The blur on the front wing does look a bit strange to me, the blur comes out looks like cloning tool.

Cute bird, I would of like that you got less of the perch in focus and more of his head, Love the blur on the winds. Great job:)

I think you managed to get the head sharp enough, and the angle is very nice. I'm a fan of flash blur!

Very unique image, Lance, and I like it a lot! The blur looks just right to me with enough sharpness on the head. Well done!

Hi Lance...I like it...Just the right amount of blur vs sharpness

Lance, I'm sitting here wondering just how much your flash contributed to the exposure at 1/16th power. Did you test various flash outputs on any subjects to get the effect you wanted? How did you come to choose 1/16?
    Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron - One thing to consider is the subject to flash distance - these are tiny birds - maybe 3 inches and this is close to full frame. So I was very very close to these guys, any closer and I would have needed extension tubes.

SO full power flash would have been overkill - I did indeed test the amount of flash before hand - these guys love this perch and at certain times of the day will continually land there - giving a patient person lots of opportunity to experiment - thus I determined 1/16th looked the best to me.

The other thing is that at 1/250th this is high speed sync mode which works differently to normal flash - the flash fires the whole time the shutter is open - makes it hard to freeze action - but does produce a ghosting type effect that I like.

Thanks for the explanation Lance. It makes perfect sense.

    Hi Lance

Had no idea about how close you were so I was wondering about the setting also but do understand. The part I don't is what is a flash blur? Not sure how the flash contributes to the blur other than illuminating and if any sharpening the image It is well done and beautiful !!

Hi AL - understand , maybe my terminology is wrong ---- I find with high speed sync flash that it indeed blurs, you get a ghosting type effect and a ethereal feel. Dont know what else to call it I guess.
    Any Idea's?

Hi AL - isn't ???- Rear curtain Sync - the flash fires at the end of the exposure.

High speed sync - flashes fires for entire length of the exposure (in a series of bursts)
