The GBH were doing this all morning as they usually do, dragging a primary or 2 as they would fly to grab a stick for the nest. I have at least 5 almost identical to this one. Would have stopped down and went with a faster shutter speed but I didnt relalize I was only at 200 ISO, I thought I was at 400-800 or so.
I noticed with this and the others in the series in dull low contrast soft light, the dynamic 3D 51 point on the D300 can lock on to the body and is very consistent. And the meter was right on in the low light.
This is a straight extracted, not converted, Jpeg from the NEF file, no cropping, just a little curves.
NIKON D300 Dynamic 3D AF, and 200-400mm f/4G AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor handheld.
1/500, F4 Manual mode. Zero on the meter. ISO: 200
Stunning image Robert. Colors and detail are amazing.
I think I would have preferred the bird a little bit higher in the frame though. As much as the trail is a great catch it also make me flip my focus between the eye and the trail. I think having them closer to the 1/3 points would help the overall balance.
Would love to have that shot in my collection though.
This is lovely, Robert. Lovely background and trailing wing tip is great. I am happy with it low in the frame as your shooting position was above the bird. I have also been very happy with the D300 focusing and metering - a definite step up from the D200
Beautiful, Robert. I love that dragging wing. I was thinking of skipping Venice rookery during my upcoming Florida trip when I heard that things were a little slow. This image has convinced me that I have to go there!
Gorgeous image. Very deep and rich colors and tones makes it very pleasing, along with the nice blurring background. Pretty impressive for an "Extracted" (1st or 2nd generation? :> ?) JPEG!
A superb capture Robert with loads of impact - The green water works beautifully here as a back-drop for the heron, and that water contact is the icing on the cake!!
