I took this earlier today in the morning just after sunrise. Settings were -

1/1600 sec, f/8 Mode: Av Metering: Evaluative Exp comp: -1/3 ISO: 400

Cleaned up another bird in bg, reduced bg NR and applied usm. Your c&c will be appreciated.

PMP = pretty much perfect. Love the angled flight, the perfect EXP, and the mountain. Now all you need is the same image with a prettier bird.

Beautifully done Indranil! I like the details on the wings. Your exposure and lighting look good also. Nice HA.

I registered just to ask this question: Mr. Morris and Mr. Kurywczak, you are faulting the "beauty" of the pelican. I don't understand what you mean, can you give examples?

    Thanks

Hi Baldy, Do you have hair? (Sorry, I just couldn't resist.) Actually, folks have had lots of reason to call me "Baldy" for more than a decade. More seriously, welcome George.

About 26 years ago I showed a bird photograph that I liked, and the instructor said that I had done everything right but that I needed to "pick a better looking subject next time." I forget the species but do remember that the bird was a ratty-looking molting bird.

Here, we were not "faulting" the beauty of the pelican, we were simpy commenting on the bird's apprearance.

#1: the pink on the top of the upper mandible indicated that this is a young bird, probably almost one year old. The young birds (though they can be quite beautiful earlier in their first year, are never as pretty as the adults in breeding plumage. See this post for an example of a bird in at least partial breeding plumage: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=44301

#2: The bird in this image is molting some of its flight feathers (though not heavily). The 6th primary on the bird's far wing is only partially grown and there is a gap between two flight feathers a bit inside of that. And there is a bigger gap in the same area on the near wing as well as two secondary feathers with apparently damaged tips.

So yes, both Roman and I perceived this as a bird on the ugly side. Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder but in this case at least two of us agreed (as did Indrianl who said, "Thanks Artie. I am going to work on it... :) "

Thanks for asking George. I hope that this is not your last post. :)

Thanks Mr. Morris, now I understand what you and Mr. Kurywczak are saying. I looked at he bird and saw a thing of beauty, I didn't understand the nuances you refer to.

    Thanks for your answer.

You are most welcome. It is a beautiful image that was well executed. A clean, adult bird in breeding plumage would turn a very good to excellent image into a Family Jewel.
