Had I realized there was a BPN ID forum I would have submitted this sooner. This was taken on May 11 of this year, and I have been calling it a female Baltimore Oriole, but was never sure. A male BO was in the immediate vicinity and was in full courting display. But Sibley's image of the female BO shows a whitish throat, and this looks a bit like his depiction of the Bullock's x Baltimore hybrid. Princeton, NJ is a strange place for the ranges to overlap. Sorry for the poor photo, and the fact that the wings aren't well shown. Any ideas?
Bill- I agree it looks like the hybrid shown in Sibley, although it's not showing the black line through the eye, which the Bullock's and the hybrid seems to have. My best guess is a young male Baltimore that is moulting in its summer plumage in its second year of life.
Thanks. That sounds like a good guess. Sibley says that molt doesn't occur until July-August and this was in the height of mating season; but a hybrid in NJ is probably less likely.
