    These guys are migrating through New Mexico at this time of the year. Photographed in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. This is about 80% of the full frame.


    Technicals:

    Canon 50D
    500mm f/4 with 1.4x TC
    1/400 @ f/5.6
    ISO 400
    580 Flash @ -1 2/3

    I like the angle, soft light, sharpness and BG and only wish we could see the tail, too.

    The brightly-colored bird against the rich green background is quite pleasing. Sharpness and exposure look spot on. I might prefer to move the bird down just a bit in the frame to so that the branch is not so prominent.

    beautiful bird with a nice background. Just wish the tail was visible.

    Funny, I didn't even miss the tail....such a nice sharp image of this beauty. I'd remove the cut nubbin on the perch in front of him, and overall, the bird feel a little crowded and large in the frame (my taste, I'm sure).

    Fantastic capture, does not look like a flash shot to me because there is enough natural eye reflection to overcome the single dot that I pressume to be a flash dot. I have no problem with the tail, this is how they look perched. I wish it were my image.
