I have spend countless hours with these cool birds but never have I seen one molesting a crab like this. Some people are just born to be lucky! Love the setting, the reflection, the plumage of the bird, the prey item and the puling motion. Congrats on this one Alan!

I think Ruddy Turnstones are one of the most beautiful shorebirds and you've captured their essence perfectly with the feeding. Only thing I might consider is removing one of the catchlights. (the "one sun, one light idea).

I like how the turnstones feet have dug into the wet sand, caused from the tugging on the crab. I like the low perpective in this, and lovely colours and detail captured throughout. Killer BG too.

    Thanks Krijn,

Well luck is a big part of bird photography, but to inhance the luck factor, I found the Crab laying on the sand with a Willet eating it. I picked it up and layed it in this nice blue water and got in position and waited. It was not long before two or three different species found it. So planning can increase the luck factor ;-)

    Hi Alan

The turnstones (we drop the ruddy bit here in the UK) have just started returning here in the last couple of weeks including some still in their summer colours. They make great subjects but these early returners seem much more nervous than later on in the year. This is a wonderful combination of colour angle, pose and action. A smart move by you to set the crab where you wanted it, which paid off well.

    Cheers

    Rich

This is soooo cool. Your timing couldn't have been better and the glassy look to the foreground adds alot IMO.
