I'm not sure if this qualifies as a macro, since it was captured with a long zoom. I was set up for photographing songbirds when my wife spotted this guy on a thistle. I had to back off until I reached a distance where the AF would work.

    D90 with 80-400 @400mm. ISO 500, 1/1600s. @F6.3. 0EV. Matrix metering, AF-A, Aperture priority. HH.

    Comments appreciated.

Nice shoot, The flower looks good to me sharp and the colors are nice, but wish the bugs face was more in focus, and a lil crop from the top, IMO Great job:)

Hi Bill - like the composition - a slight crop from the top as mentioned for my tastes also. Perhaps a little nore sharpening as well particularly in the face area. Might have stopped down a bit more - plenty of shutter speed there to play with.
Good show - keep them coming :)

Very nice Bill, really like the BG. Agree with a bit of a crop. A few minor tweaks, sharpening the eye, will make this even better I think. Good angle on the BF too.

Good advice. Thanks. I definitely could have stopped down some - in my rush to shoot before he flew away, I didn't check the DOF, and had no idea that the distant BG would turn out totally devoid of detail. I have tried to selectively sharpen the face and antennae, and cropped a bit from the top, which does help. I also added a bit of canvas at the bottom and cloned in just a bit more stem. I'm not sure of the latter, but I think it may help. I'd like everyones' thoughts on the repost.

    I appreciate the help.

Think it looks VG Bill. Not too sure about the clone at the bottom, might just go to the third leaf. Think you did well with 6.3.

Lovely image Bill !!! Sweet pose, bug and bg !!!

Tech wise got one suggestion .. with the bg that far away you might be able to stop down more, if the insect allows do take several at different apertures. Also with your lens try no shooting a max zoom for the sharpest results. Most test indicate the worst performance at/near 400.
